is the most popular choice for many foreigners and expats who visit Thailand or work there. The most popular area of Sukhumvit is between Nana BTS and On Nut BTS stations.
Lower Sukhumvit is generally the low Soi’s between Nana BTS Station and Thonglor BTS Station, or Soi’s 1/2 – 55/38. Lower Sukhumvit is also a major business district of Bangkok and many local and international corporations who trade in Thailand will have their headquarters in or around the prestigious Asoke area. Lower Sukhumvit is popular with expats, Thai’s and tourists; it is a popular location to rent a condo in Sukhumvit
. The area also has a number of world class shopping malls including Emporium Mall and the new Terminal 21 themed mall which is attached to Asoke BTS via a walkway. The world famous / infamous red light district of Soi ‘s Nana and Cowboy (4 and 23 respectively) operate in Lower Sukhumvit and are usually a must see tourist attraction for those on vacation in Bangkok.
Upper Sukhumvit Upper Sukhumvit covers the area from Soi Thonglor, Sukhumvit Soi 55 to Soi On Nut Sukhumvit Soi 77. Property in upper Sukhumvit is considerably more expensive than other areas of Sukhumvit. Thonglor and Ekamai are highly desirable addresses in Bangkok and as such demand a premium. Thonglor is famous for the great number of restaurants and wine bars found there, cuisine is truly international and Thonglor is one of the most ‘in’ places in Bangkok for a night out. Expats favour the area for its nightlife and the availability of western foods in the supermarkets and delicatessens located there. Easy access to the BTS, shopping, parks and expressways ensure that this area remains a popular location to live in Bangkok.
Outer Sukhumvit Outer Sukhumvit generally describes the area beyond On Nut on the Sukhumvit BTS line. The opening of the latest extension to the Sukhumvit line offers easier access than was previously possible to; Bang Chak, Punnawithi, Udom Suk, Bang Na and Bearing stations which has made those areas more popular with renters. Property prices in the area are still relatively low in comparison to the other areas of Sukhumvit and some bargains can be found for the price of traveling a few minutes and one or two stops past On Nut. The keen pricing has made the area popular with English teachers on a budget trying to make the most of their salary. However be warned, some areas of outer Sukhumvit can be quite remote and you may find it difficult to get taxis to agree to take you home, you may not find motorcycle taxis, taxis and food vendors and on every corner as you would in other more central areas of Bangkok. There will also be less westerners socializing in the area but that is why accommodation is cheaper, you must make the choice of what is most important for you.
